Masindi: The Minister for Internal Affairs, Retired Maj. Gen. Kahinda Otafiire, has urged police officers to enrol for further studies and strive to be promoted.

He was presiding over the passing out of 261 police officers who underwent a six-month basic officer training course at Kabalye Police Training School in Masindi district on Thursday, July 4, 2024.

Out of the 261 officers, 215 were men and 46 were female.

Minister Otafiire also asked the police officers to acquire more knowledge, support their superiors, solve the problems, but also listen to them, embrace teamwork, and play their responsibility.

He observes tough times ahead for the police force and challenges the grandaunts to support the IGP by executing what he can’t do. Otafiire also advised them to delegate their juniors to do what they are meant to do, but often correct them whenever they make mistakes and give them support.

Abasi Byakagaba, the Inspector General of Police, asked the police officers to be committed to serving the community, fight corruption, build good relationships with the community, be responsive to crimes, and remember the code of conduct and community policing.

He said that together as a team, key priorities for implementation will be the sub-county policing model that is aimed at the productivity of the police force, collaboration with sister forces, and preparing the force for modern policing challenges.

Speaking at the same function, the deputy director for human resource development, Moses Kafero, disclosed that the police are working with the national council for high education on the accreditation of all police training schools in the country. He, however, said that some minor courses on human rights, discipline, and smartness would be conducted at the regional level.

ACP Ezekiel Emitu, the commandant of Kabalye Police Training School, said that the officers were drowned in different directorates of police and have been transformed, prepared, and equipped with basic leadership and skills.

He therefore asked them to be ready to learn, mostly during this era of digital transformation.

The passed-out police officers also attained the new rank of Assistant Inspector of Police (AIP).
