Masindi youth warned against criminal acts in push for development

He emphasized the importance of staying in harmony with local authorities to foster a conducive environment for growth.

Masindi: Brigadier General Fred Rugadya Akiiki, Director of the National Emergency Centre and Operations Centre (NECOC), has called on the youth of Kijura town in Masindi Central Division to avoid criminal activities and focus on positive, constructive paths to contribute to their community’s development.

The call came during his address as the chief guest at the final match of the Rwijere Christmas Cup, held at Rwijere Primary School in Nyangahya Division.

The tournament, organized by Rogers Amanyire, an aspiring candidate for the Masindi Municipality mayoral seat, saw Nyamigisa FC face off against Stage 9 FC from Kihande Cell.

Stage 9 FC emerged victorious, claiming a trophy, a new football, medals, and cash rewards.

Gen. Rugadya, originally from Rwijere Cell but now residing in Kijura Cell, expressed concern over the increasing involvement of youth from Kijura in criminal activities, which he stated is hindering their progress and relationship with authorities.

He emphasized the importance of staying in harmony with local authorities to foster a conducive environment for growth.

As part of his commitment to promoting sports, Gen. Rugadya pledged to support Rwijere FC with jerseys and shoes, furthering his goal of encouraging youth participation in sports as a tool for personal and community development.

Rogers Amanyire, in his remarks, urged parents to recognize and nurture their children’s talents as a means of promoting their abilities and keeping them away from crime.

He highlighted that many young people resort to theft, fighting, and other criminal acts due to idleness, especially during school holidays.

The tournament, he said, was designed to engage youth during this period and keep them focused on positive activities.

Karungi Christine Byenkya, the female councilor for Kiryanga Ward in Masindi Municipality, emphasized the role of sports in reducing unemployment.

She noted that many people are now making a living through sports, illustrating its potential to provide sustainable livelihoods while also contributing to societal wellbeing.

The event concluded with a call to action for both parents and local leaders to unite in supporting youth initiatives, providing them with opportunities that can deter criminal behavior and promote personal and communal advancement.
