Masindi residents struggle to access water

‘’People are flocking to our area due to sugarcane activities, and the boreholes we have are not enough; sometimes we spend nights without water,’’ he stressed.

Masindi: Residents of Bisenyi village in Kigulya Parish, Mirya Sub County, Masindi district are struggling to access water due to inadequate water sources.

According to residents, the five boreholes they have are not enough due to the increasing population attributed to the sugarcane activities in their area.

Robert Byenkya, the area defense chairperson, told our reporter that though they have five boreholes in the area, they have been overwhelmed by the dense population of about 5,000 people.

Lennox Masende, the area vice chairman, stressed that people are flocking to the area due to the sugarcane activities, thus the water crisis, adding that sometimes they spend nights without water and children delay reporting to school due to a shortage of water.

‘’People are flocking to our area due to sugarcane activities, and the boreholes we have are not enough; sometimes we spend nights without water,’’ he stressed.

Rosemary Mugasa, a resident, said that due to the dense population, boreholes sometimes get mechanical problems. She stressed that there are increased cases of domestic violence emanating from inadequate water sources in the area.

‘’At times, women go to fetch water in the morning at around 9 a.m., and they come back home as late as 3 p.m., and this has been attributed to domestic violence,’’ she said.

Patrick Bigambwa Bright, the councillor representing Mirya Sub County in the district, said they are working in hand with the National Water and Sewerage Corporation (NWSC) to extend piped water to the area.

‘’NWSC is planning to extend water from the neighboring Pakanyi subcounty to Mirya subcounty; it will also benefit residents of Bisenyi,’’ he added.

Cosmas Byaruhanga, the Masindi district LCV chairman, said that though they have tried to allocate more boreholes to Mirya Sub County, they still have the challenge of overwhelming sugarcane workers in the area.

Byaruhanga therefore asked the investors in the subcounty to construct water sources in their ranches, as the district plans to extend piped water in the area.
