Masindi residents resort to community work to fix poor road
We also appeal to the government and local leaders to intervene and rehabilitate the road
Masindi: Residents of Kisalizi Cell in Buliima Town Council, Bujenje County in Masindi District have resorted to manually rehabilitating the six-kilometre Kisalizi–Katugo road using hoes due to its deteriorating condition.
The residents were recently found carrying out community work to repair sections of the road which had become nearly impassable.
John Tumwesige, a resident of Kisalizi Cell, said the community decided to repair the road themselves after it had been neglected for a long time. He noted that the poor condition of the road has resulted in frequent accidents.
Emmanuel Alituha, the LC1 Chairperson of Kimigi Cell, said the deteriorating state of the road is affecting service delivery since residents rely on it to access markets, health centres, and schools.
Alituha explained that the road has gone without rehabilitation for about four years, forcing residents to take the initiative to repair it themselves.
Nfunda Tumusiime said the community decided to rehabilitate the road mainly to help school-going children access their schools after some sections became impassable.
“We have decided to rehabilitate this road to help our school-going children reach their schools since some sections had become impassable. We also appeal to the government and local leaders to intervene and rehabilitate the road,” he said.
Osborn Bajuga, the Mayor of Buliima Town Council, told this publication that the town council has attempted to rehabilitate some roads in the area but is constrained by inadequate funding.
He clarified that the Kisalizi–Katugo road falls under the district’s mandate, noting that it has gone more than four years without rehabilitation. Bajuga called on the government to increase funding for road maintenance.
