Man digs own grave, invites people to his funeral
Residents discovered him digging the grave and later found the coffin inside his house.
National: In Kitheuni, Yatta, Kenya, local authorities are arranging counseling services for 24-year-old Kamende Ngwili, who dug a grave inside his home in preparation for his supposed imminent death.
Ngwili has reportedly been informing others about his funeral, scheduled for January 1, 2025. Concerns have been raised by locals who suspect that he may be contemplating suicide.
The village elder informed the area assistant chief, who visited the scene and urged Ngwili to reconsider his actions. Local police have also been involved in organizing support services for him.
A similar case occurred in September in Masindi district, Western Uganda, where Moses Wanadi, a self-employed man in his mid-30s, was detained by police after allegedly buying a coffin and digging a grave.
Residents discovered him digging the grave and later found the coffin inside his house.
This alarmed the community, as there had been no deaths in the area. The LC3 Chairperson for Karujubu Division, Solomon Asiimwe, was informed by locals and promptly contacted the police. The authorities confiscated the coffin and detained Wanadi for questioning.
Asiimwe reported that Wanadi had been reportedly terrorizing his family, especially his parents, leading to suspicions that he might have been preparing for suicide or planning harm to someone else.
Police acted swiftly to ensure his intentions were investigated. Wanadi was later arrested for theft a month after the incident and is currently in remand at Masindi Government Prison.
Authorities are encouraging communities to seek help from counselors or elders when facing personal difficulties to prevent such incidents from escalating.
