Man commits suicide in suspected love triangle
Nanyungi and Mubiru reportedly had a heated argument over Amida.
Buvuma: Police in Buvuma District are investigating a suspected suicide following a drowning incident on Lake Victoria on January 7, 2025.
The body of 34-year-old Nanyungi Stephen, a fisherman and resident of Bushenyi Zone in Ziiru Ward, Lyabana Town Council, was found in the water around 6 PM that evening.
According to the Sezzibwa Region Police spokesperson, SP Hellen Butoto, the incident is believed to be linked to a love triangle involving Nanyungi, another man named Mubiru Ronald (also known as Kafupi), and a woman identified as Tebazire Amida.
On the evening of January 6, 2025, Nanyungi and Mubiru reportedly had a heated argument over Amida. Mubiru had married Amida and the two had spent three months together.
However, after sending her home for Christmas to visit her family, she returned to Nanyungi’s home and spent two days with him. This situation led to the altercation between the two men on January 6, with Mubiru reporting the matter to the local LC1 in Bushenyi Zone in an attempt to resolve the dispute.
Despite the intervention, Nanyungi, visibly intoxicated, continued to visit relatives, telling them that he was planning to end his life and giving away some of his belongings to his brother.
The following day, his body was found in Lake Victoria, suggesting that he may have drowned himself.
SP Butoto confirmed that the police retrieved Nanyungi’s body from the lake, and investigations into the matter are ongoing.
