Man attacked by thugs allegedly targeting his wife
"They grabbed me at the door, threw me to the ground, and beat me mercilessly. I couldn’t make out their faces,"
Jinja: As the holiday season approaches, security concerns are mounting across Uganda, with criminals exploiting the festive period to carry out their activities in both urban and rural areas.
Mr. Jacob Kawanguzi, a 44-year-old driver in Jinja City, recently experienced a terrifying attack that left him fearing for his life and questioning the safety of his loved ones.
On the evening of November 13, 2024, as Kawanguzi returned home in Busige, Namulesa, he was ambushed by four unknown assailants. The attackers overpowered him at his doorstep, subjected him to a brutal beating, and left him unconscious.
“They grabbed me at the door, threw me to the ground, and beat me mercilessly. I couldn’t make out their faces,” narrated Kawanguzi, who woke up in a hospital days later after receiving medical care.
Kawanguzi recalls that the attackers repeatedly demanded to know the whereabouts of his wife, Suzan Nakafero. She had recently traveled to the United Kingdom in search of economic opportunities, a fact that may have drawn the attackers to his home.
“They kept asking about my wife. I don’t know if they wanted her or thought we had money because she traveled abroad. I’m just grateful to be alive,” Kawanguzi stated, still shaken by the incident.
Despite his economic struggles, Kawanguzi suspects that the attackers may have targeted him due to misconceptions about his financial situation or other unknown motives.
Following his recovery, Kawanguzi reported the incident to Mafubira Police Station. Authorities have promised thorough investigations to apprehend the culprits, though no arrests have been made so far.
Kawanguzi’s ordeal is not isolated. On December 6, 2034, Willy Isabirye, a 21-year-old boda boda rider, was found murdered, his body dumped in Mailo-mbili, Jinja City. His motorcycle was stolen in the attack.
Isabirye, who had recently completed his Uganda Certificate of Education exams, was working to save money for his education. His tragic death highlights the escalating insecurity in Jinja.
Kiira regional police have pledged to intensify patrols and crack down on criminal activity to ensure residents’ safety during the festive season. However, the community remains on high alert, urging prompt and effective action against the growing wave of violence.
These incidents reflect the urgent need for heightened security and community vigilance in Jinja and surrounding areas. For many, the festive season has become a time of anxiety instead of celebration.
