Kitgum woman ventures into boda boda business

“I am very happy to be providing for myself and showing other women that this business is not just for men,” she added.

Kitgum: Apwoyo Mercy, a woman from Akara Orima in Mucwini Subcounty, Kitgum District, has broken new ground by joining the male-dominated Boda Boda business in Kitgum.

Apwoyo, a resident of Pandwong Division in Kitgum Municipality, shared in an exclusive interview that her journey into the Boda Boda sector began in February 2025, after having worked as a casual laborer in Kitgum Municipality.

“I first worked as a casual laborer in Kitgum Municipality before joining the Boda Boda business in February this year, and I’m thriving,” Apwoyo explained.

Apwoyo has made history as the first woman in Kitgum District to enter the Boda Boda business. In her interview, she expressed hope that her success would encourage other women to join the industry, dispelling the stereotype that the business is only for men.

Now operating from her Boda Boda stage at Acholi Pub in Central Division, Kitgum Municipality, Apwoyo has gained financial independence and is able to provide for herself and her family. Within just over a month and a half, she has already built a loyal customer base and is reaping the rewards of her entrepreneurial effort.

“I am very happy to be providing for myself and showing other women that this business is not just for men,” she added.

Apwoyo is a registered member of the Kitgum Active Boda Boda Association. Pido Simon, the Chairperson of the association, confirmed that while there are four female Boda Boda riders in the area, only two are currently active in the business.

The Boda Boda business has traditionally been a male-dominated industry, but Apwoyo’s success is challenging this norm, paving the way for other women in the district to consider joining this venture.
