Kitgum, Lamwo incorporated into customary land titling by the Ministry of Land
This process aims to provide land tenure security for communities that do not yet have customary land titles.
Lamwo: The Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development has incorporated Kitgum and Lamwo districts into its initiative for the registration of customary land under communal land associations.
This announcement was made by the Kitgum District Woman MP, Hon. Aber Lillian, who is also the State Minister for Relief, Disaster Preparedness, and Refugees in the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) in an interview with this publication.
The announcement follows a letter dated September 9, 2024, authored by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development, Mrs. Okalany W. Dorcas.
The letter states that Kitgum and Lamwo districts will join Agago district in incorporating families, sub-clans, and clans into communal land associations and the registration of customary land.
Hon. Aber further explained that a Ministry team will engage political and technical leaders from the three districts. These leaders, in turn, will inform the local communities about the initiative to secure certificates of ownership under customary land tenure.
According to the letter obtained by this publication, officials from the Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development will meet with stakeholders from Kitgum, Lamwo, and Agago districts within two months to coordinate activities for the land registration process.
The Ministry is already conducting customary land tenure registration exercises in the sub-counties of Wol and Paimol in Agago district and will soon extend these efforts to Kitgum and Lamwo.
This process aims to provide land tenure security for communities that do not yet have customary land titles.
