Kitgum government school fails to register candidates for decades

Since the school’s establishment in 1991, it has yet to register a single candidate.

Kitgum: A government-aided primary school in Orom East Sub-County, Kitgum District, known as Lucom Primary School, has been battling to register candidates for over 32 years.

Since the school’s establishment in 1991, it has yet to register a single candidate.

Bruno Nelson, the Orom East Sub-County Chairperson, told this publication that the school has never registered any candidates, as many pupils drop out due to teenage pregnancy or choose farming over education.

‘’The school has never registered any candidates, as many pupils drop out due to teenage pregnancy or choose farming over education.’’

Additionally, the school has not progressed beyond primary five and has not participated in music, dance, and drama at the sub-county level.

Nelson attributes the issue to parents, many of whom send their children to work on farms instead of attending school, adding that some parents are unaware of the benefits of education.

‘’The sub-county is considering implementing by-laws to compel parents to send their children to school. Many parents and guardians send their children to work on farms instead of attending school,’’ he stressed.

Hon. Arwai Christopher Obol, the Kitgum District Chairperson, acknowledged awareness of the challenges faced by primary schools in Orom East. He identified hunger as a significant factor contributing to the high dropout rates among children, adding that the district is working to engage other agencies to support school feeding programs and improve resource availability.
