He said the hospital has long struggled with limited essential equipment amidst a high patient load, a situation that has sometimes led to loss of lives.

Kisoro: The Kisoro Woman Member of Parliament, Hon. Akifeza Grace Ngabirano, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, has delivered oxygen machines and other critical medical equipment to Kisoro District General Hospital.

Hospital authorities say the intervention is expected to save the lives of over 1,000 patients every month.

The donated equipment includes patient monitors, oxygen concentrators, and scrub uniforms, among others. The donation, lobbied for by Hon. Ngabirano, is intended to support patients with low oxygen levels, particularly those suffering from respiratory complications.

Speaking at the handover ceremony held at the hospital premises in Kisoro Municipality, Mr. Kwiringira Dickson, representing Hon. Ngabirano, said she is pleased to see her efforts bear fruit. “Good health is the foundation of development and wealth,” he noted.

He added that Hon. Ngabirano remains committed to lobbying for essential services for her constituents and applauded Kisoro residents for continuously entrusting her with their votes, assuring them of her dedication to service delivery.

The Principal Medical Superintendent of Kisoro District General Hospital, Dr. Bahane Emmanuel, commended Hon. Ngabirano for prioritizing the health sector.

He revealed that the hospital has struggled with a shortage of functional patient monitors, particularly in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU).

“Some of the few available monitors had broken down, affecting service delivery,” he explained. Dr. Bahane assured the public that the new equipment will improve care in theatres, the ICU, and in the management of infectious diseases, respiratory complications, and other conditions that cause low oxygen levels.

Kisoro District Health Officer (DHO), Dr. Bosco Muhangi, noted that the hospital serves not only Kisoro District but also patients from Rubanda District, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Rwanda.

He said the hospital has long struggled with limited essential equipment amidst a high patient load, a situation that has sometimes led to loss of lives.

He emphasized the critical role of oxygen machines in supporting patients in critical condition and commended both the Ministry of Health and Hon. Ngabirano for their continued support in improving healthcare services in the district.

Meanwhile, Assistant Resident District Commissioner (RDC), Mr. Nizeyimana John, urged hospital authorities to put the equipment to immediate use. He cautioned that such machines are expensive and stressed the importance of proper maintenance to ensure long-term service delivery.

Kisoro Municipality Mayor and LC5 Chairperson-elect, Mr. Nryana Richard, called for cooperation among stakeholders and assured residents that more development projects are underway to improve service delivery across the district.
