Kiryandongo: Local leaders in Kiryandongo District have been urged to strengthen their support for government schools to improve academic performance across the district.
The call was made by District Speaker Kizza Godwin during an awards ceremony for pupils who attained first grades in Kibanda South County organized by area MP Jacob Karubanga.
Kizza emphasized the need for unity among leaders to ensure schools are adequately facilitated.
“It’s time for development, and education is key. We must work together to ensure our schools receive the necessary resources to produce well-rounded individuals who can contribute to the growth of our community,” he stated.
LC3 Chairperson for Mboira Sub-county, Watumbe Micheal, commended the efforts of Kibanda South Member of Parliament Jacob Karubanga Atenyi, saying his development agenda addresses key sectors, including education.
The Joanita Kartel Foundation was also recognized for its continued support toward girl-child education. Its Chief Executive Officer, Biwaga Joan Grace, shared her personal experience and stressed the importance of parental guidance and protection of girls.
“Many girls are victims of circumstances; let’s protect them. Education is the key to unlocking their potential and breaking the cycle of poverty,” she said.
Hon. Karubanga pledged bursaries for needy learners and promised to advocate for improved teacher salaries.
“We’re fighting hard to see teacher salaries improved. They deserve better compensation for the crucial role they play in shaping our future leaders,” he noted.
Among the challenges highlighted was the high teacher-student ratio of 1:70, alongside wage constraints that hinder teacher recruitment. Stakeholders expressed hope that addressing these issues would significantly improve education outcomes in the district.
The event also recognized the top 72 performing students from both primary and secondary government-aided schools in Kibanda South Constituency. Hon. Karubanga presented awards including scholastic materials, sanitary pads, bedsheets, blankets, and mattresses to outstanding learners.
“This is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our teachers and students,” he said. “Let’s continue to support each other and work towards a brighter future for Kiryandongo.”
