Katakwi LC3 Chairman arrested over cattle theft

He noted that this is the first instance of theft involving leaders in his district.

Katakwi: The LCIII Chairperson of Ongongoja sub-county in Katakwi district, William Omeke, has been arrested in connection with the theft of 22 herds of cattle belonging to the Karamojong in Porom sub-county, Napak district.

Omeke was apprehended along with his two nephews, Simon Peter Morotum, a butcher in Usuk Town Council, and a Uganda Peoples Defence Forces (UPDF) soldier attached to him.

Security operatives recovered a skin and two animals from a butcher owned by Simon Pete Morotum in Usuk Town Council.

Major Godfrey Katamba, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Katakwi, has confirmed the arrest of the trio, saying they are currently detained at the 3rd division headquarters in Moroto.

‘’We have them in custody awaiting appearance in court martial, as per the Uganda People’s Defence Forces Act,’’ he said.

Katamba noted that this is the first instance of theft involving leaders in his district.

He emphasized that security operatives are working tirelessly to disarm Karamojong warriors, with an 80% success rate in the “Lala Kwa Wote” program aimed at bringing peace to the regions of Teso and Karamoja.

Meanwhile, Geoffrey Omolo, the LCV Chairman of Katakwi District, took to social media to address the arrest, urging everyone to seek accurate information and refrain from jumping to conclusions.

He promised to remain accountable and communicate within his limits.

Omolo added that there are appropriate individuals responsible for addressing the details and complaints related to this matter.

‘’It would be unfair and a grave injustice if anyone used personal reasons or hatred to target Hon. William Omeke. I urge everyone to refrain from jumping to biased conclusions,’’ Omolo said.

The RDC, however, emphasized that security forces are determined to eradicate cattle theft in the district, promoting peace through naming and shaming those suspected of involvement.
