Karuma market vendors demand missing iron sheets donated by OPM
As the situation unfolds, the vendors are calling for clarity and action to ensure the iron sheets are used for their intended purpose.
Kiryandongo: Gloria Aciro, the acting chairperson of Karuma market vendors, has expressed concerns over missing iron sheets intended to address infrastructure issues at the market.
Aciro highlighted that despite the iron sheets being made available in 2022, no construction work has been undertaken at the dilapidated market.
Edith Kafuko, the town clerk for Karuma town council, is now calling for an explanation from market vendor leaders. She claims that the previous chairperson, Catalina Auno, left her office without properly handing over the iron sheets.
Kafuko also pointed out that the local government authorities, including LCIII chairman Ismail Bongomin, are unaware of the sheets’ current location.
When approached for comment, Catalina Auno declined to provide any response, citing a lack of formal education as the reason for her silence on the matter.
The iron sheets were part of a donation from the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) in May 2022, spearheaded by the Minister of State for Bunyoro Affairs, Jennifer Namuyangu Kacha. The total value of the donation was 300.1 million shillings, intended to support 11 groups across the district.
Out of the 200 iron sheets received by Kiryandongo District Local Government (KDLG), 30 were allocated to Karuma market vendors, who have been struggling with a collapsed roof at their market. With over 150 vendors, mostly involved in food sales, the infrastructure upgrades are expected to significantly improve the market environment and support the livelihoods of the vendors.
As the situation unfolds, the vendors are calling for clarity and action to ensure the iron sheets are used for their intended purpose.
