Kamuli counterfeit note distribution ringleader committed to High Court
A manhunt is underway for the remaining suspects to bring them to justice.
Kamuli: The Kamuli Chief Magistrates Court, under the guidance of Chief Magistrate Aisha Nabukeera, has charged Sowedi Egumbye, 32, with aggravated robbery. He has been committed to the High Court for trial.
Egumbye, a resident of Bugaga B Cell, Nawantumbi Ward, Nawanyago Town Council, is accused of robbing Paul Shilikya of UGX 5 million in cash and property valued at UGX 9 million.
Egumbye was arrested during an intelligence-led operation on November 26, 2024, at around 4:00 AM at his residence.
In March 2024, Egumbye and accomplices, still at large, allegedly lured Shilikya from Kireka with promises of exchanging Ugandan currency for counterfeit US dollars.
Upon meeting the suspects in Nawanyago, Shilikya was robbed of cash and a bag containing phones.
On August 19, 2023, the group reportedly attacked Nawanyago Police Cells, attempting to free a detained associate linked to counterfeit money distribution.
According to ASP Michael Kasadha, spokesperson for the Busoga North Police, the group targets victims primarily from urban areas like Kampala.
Where deception fails, they resort to violence, using tools and sticks to rob their victims.
The case file is being prepared for submission to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
A manhunt is underway for the remaining suspects to bring them to justice.
