UG Decides 2026

Incumbent Zombo LCV secures NRM party flag amid low voter turnout

Despite the orderly voting process, the primaries were marred by low voter turnout across the district’s 15 sub-counties and town councils.

Zombo:  Zombo District LCV Chairperson, James Oruna Oyullu, has secured the National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag for the 2026 general elections, following a decisive victory in the party primaries held on Thursday, July 24, 2025.

Announcing the results at 7:53 PM from the tally center at Zombo District Headquarters, NRM District Registrar Prisca Unegiu confirmed Oyullu’s win across the district’s 752 polling stations.

Oyullu garnered 24,826 votes (70.4%), comfortably defeating his sole challenger, John Orwiny, who secured 10,422 votes (29.6%).

“With 15 sub-counties and 752 polling stations, the final tally is: Oyullu Oruna James with 24,826 votes (70.4%), and Orwiny John with 10,422 votes (29.6%). I hereby declare Oyullu Oruna James, having garnered the highest votes, as the duly nominated NRM flag bearer for 2026,” Unegiu declared.

In his remarks, Oyullu thanked voters for their continued trust and called for unified support heading into the 2026 general election.

Supporters praised his record, particularly in expanding road and footbridge infrastructure, and voiced optimism about his ability to deliver more if re-elected.

Meanwhile, many incumbent councilors also retained their party nominations. However, several defeated candidates notably declined to collect their declaration forms after the results were announced.

Despite the orderly voting process, the primaries were marred by low voter turnout across the district’s 15 sub-counties and town councils.

Herbert Limthum of Central Ward in Paidha Town Council attributed the voter apathy to lingering dissatisfaction from the recent NRM parliamentary primaries, which he said “ignored the people’s will.” Jacob Angala of Molujei Cell, Zombo Town Council, echoed this view, citing deep voter disillusionment.

Registrar Unegiu cautioned winners not to become complacent:

“Do not relax, or you will face disappointment in the general election.”

Zombo Resident District Commissioner, Festus Ayikobua, commended all candidates for a peaceful exercise and called for unity:

“Let us remain united and avoid divisive rhetoric. Our candidates must now focus on countering opposition propaganda by showcasing the party’s achievements.”

With over 100,000 registered NRM members, the low voter turnout remains a point of concern and raises questions about grassroots enthusiasm as the 2026 general election approaches.
