Masindi: Over 200 golfers from the East African region have participated in the 25th Kinyara Open Golf Tournament.

The two-day tournament organized by Kinyara Sugar Company was held at Kinyara Sugar Golf Course over the weekend. It was sponsored by several companies, including Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB), Pepsi, and ICEA Lion Insurance, among others.

Speaking during the event, Kinyara Sugar Company Corporate Communications Manager, Aldon Walukamba, noted that the tournament attracted both amateur and professional golfers from the region. Walukamba added that the professionals were drawn from over ten clubs in the region.

He explained that the tournament is part of Kinyara’s cooperative social responsibility aimed at giving back to the community by helping fight non-communicable diseases that are on the rise in the country by helping the participants exercise their bodies.

The communications manager added that the tournament acted as a networking and marketing platform for the entities that participated in it.

He revealed that Kinyara Sugar Company will every year organize the Kabalega Open Golf Tournament in honor of the great Bunyoro King, which is expected to attract more golfers from the region.

Joseph Cwinya-ai, last year’s champion, won the professional category and took home a trophy plus a prize of 10 million shillings. Other well-performing participants got trophies and prizes, including TV screens, fridges, and ovens, among other prizes.

Patricia Nakwiya, a golfer from West Nile, applauded the organizers for the event, underscoring the importance of golf. She said that unlike team games, golf teaches one the need to work alone in order to achieve their goals in life.

Nakwiya added that golf is also a game that can be played by people of all ages, unlike football and athletics, which require a lot of physical energy.

She added that by participating in the tournament, she exercises her body, which helps her stay fit.
