Hoima stadium truck drivers protest over unpaid wages

The $129 million Hoima City Stadium project is a crucial component of Uganda's preparations to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Hoima: More than ten Sino truck drivers working on the Hoima City Stadium construction project are demanding justice over alleged non-payment of their wages.

The drivers, who have now parked their trucks near Hass Fuel Station at Lottery along Kinubi Road, accuse Nexius Company, a subcontractor hired by MS Summa, of failing to pay them. The company recruited them from Kasese to transport marram to the construction site.

They have been hauling marram over a distance of approximately 2.5 kilometers to the construction site in Kyarwiru Cell, Mparo Ward.

George Nkwasibwe, one of the affected drivers, states that each driver is owed one week’s wages, with daily earnings set at UGX 750,000.

“We were stopped from working two weeks ago, and now we are struggling to survive in the city. Even finding space to park our trucks has become a challenge,” he said.

Alfred Ayebazibwe, another driver, added that they are under pressure from their bosses, who are demanding payments for their work.

John Ntegeka, also a driver, has appealed to authorities to intervene and ensure they receive their wages.

Efforts to get a comment from the subcontractor, Nexius Company, were unsuccessful, as the director, Patrick Aeku, did not respond to calls.

Murat Altun, the project manager at MS Summa, clarified that all payments to Nexius were made at the beginning of the week.
