Hoima council rejects nomination of district land board member over land disputes

He says if the land board goes wrong, it’s them to blame, not the councilor or district leader.

Hoima: Hoima district council has rejected the nomination of Fredrick Kakoraki to become a member of the Hoima district land board.

During the council meeting held on Thursday, August 29, 2024, the leader of government business Hellen Mulumba presented a motion suggesting the nomination of Kakoraki as a member of the district land board; however, a section of councilors rejected the nomination on grounds that the nominee has court issues regarding land wrangles.

The councilors say by the time Kakoraki was the vice chairman of Hoima district some years back, a lot of land wrangles and evictions emerged, so they can’t trust him.

According to Hon. Swahib Nyangabyaki, the council speaker, Hoima district disclosed that they could not pass the motion to nominate Kakoraki because the CV he submitted had different signatures, and above all, he also has court cases, thus needing time to investigate him before being nominated.

Jackson Mulindambura, councilor for Kiganja Sub County, revealed that they are no longer following the local government act, which is crippling deliberations in council.

He says currently the district land board is incomplete because it has no representative of PWDs, thus nominating Kakoraki since he was a person of integrity during his term as the vice chairperson at the district.

Uthuman Mugisa Mubarak, the LCV Chairman for Hoima district, disclosed that Kakoraki’s name was nominated because he is experienced and was a person who worked hard to develop the district during his time of leadership.

Mugisa explained that the land board is an independent body, so there is no need for the councilors to blame Kakoraki for the mistakes of the former land board during his time as the vice chairperson.

He says if the land board goes wrong, it’s them to blame, not the councilor or district leader.

During the same council, the area land committee for Kigorobya town council was also approved by the district council.

These are Apollo Ahebwa as the chairperson of the committee, David, Emmanuel Asaba, and Stella Katahoirwe.
