Hoima: To enhance revenue performance in Hoima City, the city authorities are planning a joint executive meeting between the East and West divisions.
The objective is to create a unified strategy for tax collection, as disclosed by Sylvia Nalumaga, the leader of government business at the Hoima City Council, during a recent council meeting at the Hoima Buffalo Hotel on Thursday.
Nalumaga highlighted the pressing issue of low local revenue, which is limiting the city’s ability to deliver essential public services. She emphasized the importance of raising public awareness on the value of tax payments.
The upcoming joint meeting with council executive members aims to devise an improved, coordinated approach to tax collection.
Furthermore, USAID is set to implement a project to support revenue collection in Hoima, focusing on capacity-building for local leaders. This initiative is anticipated to play a significant role in boosting the city’s tax collection efforts.
Patrick Mugabi, chairperson of the general purpose committee, pointed out that internal conflicts between technocrats and politicians are a major factor behind the city’s revenue challenges.
He urged immediate action, stressing that without adequate revenue, the city’s operations are jeopardized. Idi Magezi, Hoima East Division’s male councilor, expressed optimism that the joint executive meeting will bring positive changes and improve local revenue.
During the same Hoima City Council meeting, councilors approved a resolution to phase out Bulera Demonstration Primary School in order to make space for the establishment of Bunyoro University.
Sylvia Nalumaga Balyesiima, the leader of government business, presented the motion to phase out the school, which was moved by Joshua Byenkya, male councilor for Hoima West Division, and seconded by Idi Magezi, male councilor for Hoima East Division.
Balyesiima expressed gratitude to the councilors for their teamwork in facilitating the commencement of Bunyoro University.
She emphasized the importance of engaging with the 180 pupils currently enrolled at Bulera Demonstration Primary School to ensure their smooth transition to other schools.
Godfrey Kiseka, the town clerk of Hoima City, assured councilors that the relocation of the pupils would be managed effectively.
He mentioned that the pupils would be transferred to nearby schools, including Kyentale Primary, located 3 kilometers from Bulera Demonstration, and Bwikya Muslim School.
In the same Hoima City Council meeting, councilors expressed concerns over the poor road network within the city, accusing the roads engineer of not fulfilling his duties.
Julius Ssentamu, the city engineer, responded by explaining that many of the roads mentioned, including the Karongo-Budaka Road, are still under construction.
He clarified that funds allocated for road construction have been disbursed to various suppliers and service providers, but delays in receiving these funds have affected timely service delivery.
Ssentamu emphasized that the late arrival of funding has been a significant challenge in completing the road projects on schedule.
