Heavy rain, windstorms ravage Ntungamo

He explained that the storms, which lasted for about an hour, wreaked havoc in the sub-county, leaving many people in a state of misery

 Ntungamo: Residents of Rukoni West Sub County in Ruhaama East County, Ntungamo District, are in shock after a devastating heavy downpour and windstorms hit the area, leaving widespread destruction.

The storms, which caused severe damage to the local infrastructure and crops, have left residents reeling from the aftermath.

The affected areas include Nyakabale I, Kigomero, Kanonko, Kitogotsi I, Kitogotsi II, Kitogotsi III, Rwensinga, Kakindo, and Ruhanga cells.

The storm, which struck on March 27, 2025, caused massive destruction in Rukoni Parish, where gardens of beans, coffee, bananas, and onions were washed away by heavy flooding. In addition to the damage to crops, several homes, schools, and churches had their roofs blown off.

On April 2, 2025, the devastating storms struck again, this time affecting Nyakabale Parish. The residents are now facing a dire situation as their sources of livelihood, including crops and homes, have been destroyed.

The LC III Chairman of Rukoni West Sub County, Mr. Mwine Frank, acknowledged the severe impact of the disaster, stressing the urgency of government intervention. He warned that without support, some residents may resort to theft due to food insecurity.

Mr. Mwine explained that the storms, which lasted for about an hour, wreaked havoc in the sub-county, leaving many people in a state of misery.

He called upon the area’s Member of Parliament, Hon. Benjamin Katangura Kamukama, and Ntungamo District LCV Chairperson, Samuel Muchunguzi Rwakigoba, to engage with relevant authorities to provide immediate relief.

The Speaker of Rukoni West Sub County, Mr. Otim Mayrs, echoed the call for assistance, urging the Government of Uganda, particularly the Office of the Prime Minister and the Office of Disaster Preparedness, to respond quickly to the disaster.

Ruth Twebaze Kabeera, a resident of Nyakabale I, shared her frustration, saying the crops she had worked hard to cultivate were destroyed by the heavy rains and floodwaters. She expressed her hope for government intervention to help recover from the losses.

The LC I Chairperson of Kanonko Cell also expressed his sorrow over the destruction, calling for government aid in the form of relief supplies, including maize flour and beans. He suggested that each affected family should receive 100kg of maize flour and 50kg of beans to help them replant their gardens.

Farmers like Dan Mwebesa, a resident of Kanonko Cell, lamented the loss of their crops, which were at the premature stage when the floods swept them away. Another farmer, Benon Kangume, shared that he was expecting a good harvest, but the storms have completely wiped out his coffee and banana plantations, which were a primary source of income to pay for his children’s school fees.

Rukoni West Sub County consists of two parishes, Nyakabale Parish, with 11 cells, and Rukoni Parish, with 14 cells. Eight cells in Nyakabale Parish and 12 cells in Rukoni Parish were particularly affected by the storms.
