Gulu: Local communities in Cubu A and B cell, Tegwana South ward, Laroo-Pece division, in Gulu city have offered land for the establishment of a local market in their cell.
They are now optimistic that once the market is established, it will boost local revenue and reduce the transport costs one has to meet when going up to Layibi, Cuk Willobo, Cereleno, or Gulu Main Market to purchase some goods.
Local leaders say that due to the lack of local markets in the area, women who are doing market vending are reportedly trekking about 12 kilometers to and fro on a daily basis to operators of their businesses in those distanced markets; however, they are on many occasions waylaid and robed by Aguu, who target their handbags.
Watmon Walter Kato, the LC1 Chairperson of Cubu A and B Cell, says the land, whose measurement is yet to be determined, was donated last year by one local member, George Okao, freely for the establishment of the market.
Kato reveals to that they have submitted their demand for the market following their needs assessment, and they have attached a copy of the donated land document to the division’s authority through their town agent; hence, they are now waiting for feedback from the division council.
Statistics revealed by the local leader indicated that Cubu A and B have a total of 2,250 households; however, the whole population treks for about 5 to 10 kilometers looking for the market.
If established, the market will serve the people of Acoyo, Koro, Laping Oloyo, and some parts of Omoro district.
Geoffrey Otim, the division mayor for Laroo-Pece Gulu City division, welcomed the land offer and appreciated the community for taking a proactive approach toward the development of their area by donating land for their establishment of the market.
Otim says the council, through its technical staff, is going to take all the rightful procedures to see that the market is constructed, as this offers land.
