Gulu: Gulu district has offered two acres of land to house the Uganda Coffee Development Authority’s (UCDA) regional office.
The land is part of 65 acres the government has acquired in BulKer village, Oding Parish, Unyama Sub-county, Gulu district, where the presidential youth skilling center for the Acholi sub-region is established.
UCDA is mandated to regulate, promote, and oversee the coffee industry.
Opiyo Christopher Ateker, the Gulu district LC5 Chairperson who doubles as Chairperson of the Presidential Youth Skilling Centre Acholi sub-region, revealed the development in this publication, saying they offered land to UCDA inside Oding government land in a bid to promote coffee value addition and coffee growing among the farmers in Acholi sub-region.
According to Atker, the establishment of the UDCA regional office in Gulu will create more job opportunities for youth, thereby eradicating poverty in the region, which is ranked among the poorest by UBOS.
Ateker told our reporter that the UDCA will establish their regional office and set up the coffee analytical laboratory and coffee demonstration site under the 4-acre model, where about 161 million shillings have been approved by the state house to commence the implementation of the project.
He also disclosed that the district executive committees will meet officials from UCDA in a follow-up meeting to discuss the terms of the land deal.
