Gulu: Gulu City authorities have launched a series of construction projects worth Shs650 million, aimed at improving education, health, business, and public services across the city.

The groundbreaking ceremonies took place at various project sites, marking the official handover of locations to different contractors.

The events attracted officials from the city engineering department, clerks, division authorities, and community members, generating excitement and collaboration within the community.

Many of these projects had been delayed due to funding shortages, while others were recently approved by the council, signaling renewed commitment to infrastructure development.

Gulu City Clerk, Innocent Ahimbisibwe, stated that funding for the projects comes from conditional grants, local revenue, school support grants, council savings, and government allocations. He expressed optimism that all projects will be completed within three months.

Among the notable projects is the fencing of the city cemetery land in Atete B Cell in Labora sub-county Omoro district, including plans for a gatehouse and shaded areas at the Gulu City Cemetery, budgeted at 80.8 million shillings. This initiative will be overseen by Aka Construction Uganda Limited.

Educational infrastructure is also being prioritized, with the construction of five drainable latrines at Gulu PTC Demonstration Primary School for 34.9 million shillings, as well as renovations of a block featuring two classrooms, a staff room, a sickbay, and a storage area at Gulu Town Primary School for 33.1 million shillings, managed by Melwood Company Limited.

Further upgrades include the establishment of five-stance drainable latrines at both Paminano Primary School for 34.2 million shillings and Bungatira Central Primary School for 34.7 million shillings, courtesy of Star Sanitation Limited.

Additionally, a new block of classrooms at Christ the King Demonstration Primary School, costing 51.8 million shillings, and the construction of four flush toilets at Mary Immaculate Girls’ Primary School for 28.6 million shillings will be handled by Bom Water and Sanitation.

Pavcon Investment will implement four-stance flush toilets at Holy Rosary Primary School for 34.5 million shillings and five-stance drainable latrines at Pageya Primary School for 29 million shillings.

Gulu City health officer Dr. Daniel Okello noted that fencing the public cemetery will make his job easier, addressing concerns he has received from residents of Atede B village, Lapainat East, in the Labora sub-county of Omoro district about the status of the cemetery.

Geoffry Otim, the Laroo-Pece division mayor, expressed concerns about the contractor responsible for the staircases, urging timely completion to avoid negatively impacting vendors whose shops are affected during the process.

Ambrose Onoria, the Resident City Commissioner of Gulu City, emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards and value for money in these ventures, urging contractors to uphold these commitments throughout project execution.
