Gulu: The government has issued a three-day ultimatum for non-compliant balaalo herdsmen to remove their cattle from Gulu and Amuru districts.

The Minister for State for Northern Uganda, Grace Freedom Kwiyucwiny, disclosed that the security has so far identified and impounded 830 heads of cattle belonging to the non-compliant Balalo herdsmen in the two districts.

She was addressing the press on Monday at the Office of the Prime Minister`s Regional Office in Gulu City. Kwiyucwiny disclosed that the herdsmen have been issued a three-day ultimatum to exit their cattle, or they will be impounded.

The cattle were impounded from government lands in Okidi and Lakang sub-counties in Amuru district and Palaro in Gulu district during a week-long operation that started on Thursday, November 30th.

Minister Kwiyucwiny says the process to secure a court order for auctioning the impounded cattle will commence on Monday, noting that the judiciary system is already aware of the process.

Currently, the cattle identified for eviction are still on the farms, awaiting the three-day expiration timeline.

On Friday, Chief Justice Alfonse Owiny Dollo disclosed in a virtual interview with journalists that President Yoweri Museveni communicated that impounded cattle belonging to defiant cattle keepers be auctioned and the money generated be used for constructing schools in Northern Uganda.

However, some of the Balaalo herdsmen have asked the government to preach unity and allow peaceful coexistence between the Balaalo and the natives of the respective areas.
