Arua: In a bid to find solutions to the scandals between the Uganda revenue enforcement team and the tax payers in West Nile, the government has announced a reduction in charges on new motorcycle number plates in the West Nile Region.

The State Minister of Finance in charge of General Duties, Henry Musasizi, made the pronouncement on Monday this week during a stakeholders’ meeting organized by the Uganda Revenue Authority (URA) at the Desert Breeze Hotel in Arua City.

Initially, the motorcycle number plate in West Nile goes for 1.5 million, which has been divided into two in order to absorb the issue of numberless motorcycles.

Musasizi also allowed the people in the region to start paying for their number plates in installments up until June this year.

Meanwhile, the commissioner general of URA, John Musinguzi, said that their enforcement officers will this time rely on intelligence-led operations to curb smuggling in the West Nile sub-region.

Musinguzi said this will help URA avoid mistakes that recently led to the loss of innocent lives in the process of curbing smuggling in West Nile.

He condemned the recent killings by URA officials in the region and also implored the public to desist from violence against tax collectors in order to make their work easier for the good of the nation.

The West Nile subregion has lost a number of taxpayers in the confrontation between the enforcement officers and the local community.

The recent killing happened in January this year in Madi Okollo district, where the enforcement team rained bullets on civilians and left Acidri Moses, a saloon operator, dead.

Acidri Moses was a resident of Pamachi village, Adra parish in Offaka Sub County.
