Fuel tanker explodes in Nebbi
The tanker, believed to be carrying a highly flammable load, is suspected to have been en route to the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Nebbi: A fuel tanker erupted in flames on Saturday evening in Nyaravur-Angal Town Council, Nebbi District, along the Pakwach-Nebbi highway, sending plumes of thick black smoke into the sky.
The truck’s number plate and the identity of the driver remained unconfirmed at the time of reporting. Eyewitness Sunday Olweny stated that the blaze broke out at approximately 5:00 p.m.
The tanker, believed to be carrying a highly flammable load, is suspected to have been en route to the Democratic Republic of Congo.
At the scene, no police or fire response teams were observed, as videos circulating online showed residents fleeing in panic while others gathered to photograph the thick smoke rising from the fire.
This incident follows a similar devastating fire last month in Nebbi Municipality’s business hub, which left widespread destruction.
The frequent fires have sparked urgent calls for the establishment of dedicated police fire brigades in the greater Nebbi region, as the current reliance on the distant Arua Fire Centre has proven inadequate for quick emergency response.
The increasing number of incidents in Nebbi, particularly near Goli One-Stop Border Point, has raised concerns about fire safety and preparedness in the region.
West Nile Police Spokesman, SP Collins Asea, confirmed the fire, stating, “Our officers are responding to a scene where a fuel tanker has ignited along the Pakwach-Nebbi road. Further details will be provided as they emerge.”
He further added, “Through this communication, the regional fire officer has been officially notified to mobilize resources.”
