Fearless thieves steal motorcycle from Paidha Police Station
Eventually, the police team returned the dog to the patrol car without making significant progress.
Zombo: A police dog was deployed on the cold Monday morning of November 25, 2024, to assist in investigating the theft of a motorcycle at Paidha Central Police Station in Zombo District.
The incident, which took place during the night of November 24, involved suspected thieves raiding the police quarters and making off with a motorcycle belonging to a police officer.
David Othembi Dozomolo, the LCI chairperson of Mvule Cell, Central Ward, where the police station is located, confirmed the theft. “We understand that a Senke motorcycle was stolen here at the police quarters. A canine dog was brought in, and we searched different parts of the town, but we couldn’t locate the stolen motorcycle,” Othembi said.
This incident follows another security lapse barely two weeks earlier, when suspected individuals reportedly raided the police counter at the same station, stealing a bunch of keys, including those for the official car of the Zombo District LCV chairperson. The vehicle is regularly parked at the station for safekeeping.
The handler of the police dog, alongside a team of officers, combed various parts of Paidha Town Council to track down the suspects. The news of the theft at the heavily guarded police station left many, including local leaders and passersby, stunned.
A source within Paidha Central Police Station, speaking anonymously, expressed disbelief: “Some thieves stole a motorcycle here, and everyone is surprised. That’s why the canine was brought in.”
In its initial attempt, the dog led the team to the premises of Paidha Town Council, a short distance from the police station, before heading toward Offaka Road. However, after circling the expansive compound of the town council, the dog seemed to lose the trail and exited the premises.
The pursuit continued as the dog briskly led the team through streets and corridors, sniffing for leads, but it ultimately failed to pinpoint the suspects. Hundreds of onlookers gathered, watching in amazement as the canine made a stop at a motorcycle repair garage on Offaka Road.
Reactions from the public were mixed, with one passerby remarking, “This is the same dog that misled people in Nebbi.”
Eventually, the police team returned the dog to the patrol car without making significant progress.
By press time, police had cordoned off the road adjacent to the station, near Christ the King Catholic Church. An armed officer was stationed at the scene, monitoring the area.
A resident of Mvule Cell, who preferred to remain anonymous, shared: “We heard that some people stole a motorcycle at Paidha Central Police Station. That’s why the road is cordoned off.”
The District Police Commander of Zombo, Nelson Nahabwe, was unavailable for comment at the time of publication.
This latest theft adds to a series of security breaches at the station. Last week, sources reported that keys for district vehicles were stolen, though details remain sparse.
Some sources speculate that the stolen motorcycle may have been smuggled across the porous border into the Democratic Republic of Congo.
