FDC speaks out on Katonga faction forming new party

The party’s emphasis on dialogue and reconciliation, as recommended by the Special Elders Committee, underscores their commitment to the betterment of the party.

Kampala: FDC President Patrick Oboi Amuriat’s stance on members leaving the party to establish new political entities reflects a commitment to constitutional rights.

While addressing the press Monday morning at the FDC Party Headquarters in Najjanankumbi, Amuriat said that the party has no issue with any member leaving FDC to establish a new political party.

‘’The Ugandan constitution, in Article 29(1)(e), guarantees the freedom to form and join associations, including political organizations,’’ he said.

Amuriat states that within the FDC, there exists freedom of entry and exit, allowing colleagues operating at Katonga Road as a pressure group to potentially evolve into a fully-fledged political party if they so choose.

The party’s emphasis on dialogue and reconciliation, as recommended by the Special Elders Committee, underscores their commitment to the betterment of the party.

Amuriat’s acknowledgment of the historical precedent set by previous leaders who ventured beyond the party’s confines is noteworthy. Hon. Beti Olive Namisango Kamya Turwomwe’s establishment of the Uganda Federal Alliance (UFA) in 2010 and Hon. Rtd. Maj. Gen. Gregory Mugisha Muntu’s formation of the Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) in 2019 exemplify this trend.

However, tensions persist within the FDC Katonga faction. Accusations of the forceful removal of party leaders have surfaced, even as Amuria acknowledges their familiarity with their colleagues’ operational methods due to past collaborations.

According to Amuriat, violence will not be tolerated, and any attempts to dislodge legally elected leaders from party headquarters will be met with an appropriate response.

In the spirit of reconciliation, the party embraces dialogue, as recommended by the Special Elders Committee report led by Hon. Prof. Frank Nabwiso. Engaging with colleagues for the betterment of the party remains a priority.
