FDC defector wins NRM Mayoral flag in Masindi

Amanyire secured a commanding 7,691 votes, well ahead of the incumbent mayor Ronald Businge Kyomuhendo, who garnered 1,950 votes.

Masindi:  Former Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) official Rogers Amanyire has won the National Resistance Movement (NRM) party primaries for Masindi Municipality Mayor, securing the party flag ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Amanyire, who previously contested for the same seat in the 2021 elections on the FDC ticket, defected to the NRM in March 2024. His victory marks a significant political shift in Masindi’s municipal race.

The results were announced by Moses Ogwang, the NRM District Electoral Commission Returning Officer, at 6:00 AM on Friday, July 25, 2025, at Masindi Education Hall.

Amanyire secured a commanding 7,691 votes, well ahead of the incumbent mayor Ronald Businge Kyomuhendo, who garnered 1,950 votes.

Meanwhile, Milly Mateeba Muhumuza secured 820 votes, Geofrey Mukuru got 723 votes, Robert Mugabi garnered 340 votes and Patrick Abitekaniza secure the least 15 votes.

Speaking to the press shortly after his declaration, Amanyire promised to prioritize peace, unity, and accountability, if elected in the general election.

“I’ll work with leaders at all levels to lobby for better service delivery in the district. I will create peace and unity to ensure inclusive development,” he stated.

Amanyire’s overwhelming victory is being seen by observers as a sign of shifting political loyalties in the region and a boost for the NRM in Masindi Municipality.
