Evicted Hoima City vendors to withdraw lawsuit after relocation

They said they are satisfied with the new site and have agreed to withdraw the lawsuit against Hoima City Local Government.

Hoima: Over 400 vendors who were evicted from Duhaga Roundabout on Tuesday are set to be relocated to a 2.5-acre piece of land in Kiganda I Cell along Hoima–Butiaba Road.

The development was revealed on Wednesday during an inspection of the proposed site by Hoima City Woman MP Asinansi Nyakato, Hoima West Division MP-elect Ismail Kasule, Resident City Commissioner Badru Mugabi, and other city authorities.

During the inspection, Hoima City Clerk Edward Lwanga said the vendors, popularly known as Kidomoole market vendors, were evicted for their own safety and as part of a nationwide enforcement of trade order in urban areas.

Asinansi called for the fast-tracking of the relocation process, noting that many vendors are dealing in perishable goods that could go bad if delays persist.

She said the 2.5-acre land, rented from Peter Ndiwalana through vendors’ associations, will accommodate more than 1,000 traders, including those from Duhaga Roundabout and street vendors from Kiryatete.

Nyakato added that authorities are waiting for a “no objection” clearance from the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) following the Environmental and Social Impact Assessment before vendors can officially settle on the land.

Hoima West Division MP-elect Ismail Kasule said leaders are following up on the environmental clearance process to ensure vendors are resettled as soon as possible. ‘’We shouldn’t celebrate now because the clearance may take long to be approved but as leaders we are going to follow up the matter,’’ he said.

Badru Mugabi, the Hoima City Resident Commissioner also pledged to expedite the environmental and social impact assessment to ensure the site meets the required standards.

Meanwhile, the vendors, through their chairperson William Musinguzi and fellow trader Anent Nyangoma Junjura, expressed appreciation to the leaders for their efforts. They said they are satisfied with the new site and have agreed to withdraw the lawsuit against Hoima City Local Government.
