Duty bearers urged to respect and promote journalists’ rights

She praised journalists in the district for their professionalism and discipline, urging them to uphold these values.

Masindi: The President of the Greater Masindi Media Practitioners Association (GMEPA), Yosam Gucwaki, has called on duty bearers and security agencies to respect and promote the rights of journalists to enable them to carry out their work without fear or interference.

Gucwaki made the remarks during the belated World Press Freedom Day celebrations held on Saturday at Masindi Kolping Hotel, bringing together media practitioners from the Greater Masindi, which includes the districts of Buliisa, Kiryandongo, and Masindi.

He emphasized that journalism is a vital profession like any other but continues to face serious challenges, including attacks, intimidation, and information denial, particularly from some duty bearers and sections of the public.

“Journalists suffer attacks and intimidation which not only threaten their safety but also hinder their ability to deliver timely and accurate information to the public,” Gucwaki stated.

He also condemned the negative attitudes and resistance journalists often face when seeking access to public information, noting that this behavior compromises transparency and accountability.

World Press Freedom Day, officially celebrated on May 3rd every year, serves as a reminder to governments and authorities of the importance of upholding press freedom and respecting journalistic work. The day also encourages media professionals to reflect on ethical standards and the role of journalism in democratic societies.

The Masindi celebrations featured a variety of community-centered activities, including the cleaning of Kijura Market, a friendly football match between journalists and corporate representatives, and a community dinner aimed at fostering stronger collaboration between the media and the public.

Isaac Bongomin, Chairperson of Masindi Central Division, applauded the journalists for their role in improving local sanitation and commended their ongoing efforts to inform and educate the community.

Masindi District Police Commander, Pensive Tukasiima, praised journalists in the district for their professionalism and discipline, urging them to uphold these values.

The event was supported by several organizations and individuals, including Kinyara Sugar Limited, Total Energies, Ubuntu, and St. Lawrence Nursery and Primary School, among others.
