Drama as residents, family members beat in-laws during their daughter’s burial ceremony

By press time, police had taken the body of the deceased to Masindi hospital mortuary for postmortem.

Masindi: Drama ensued in Kisiita Cell, Masindi Central Division, in Masindi Municipality as relatives and residents beat their in-laws who had delivered their daughter’s dead body.

The deceased Annette Asiimwe died under unclear circumstances at the home of her husband Jonathan Isingoma in Kasongoire village, Budongo Sub County, Masindi district on Wednesday.

Isingoma and his relatives who accompanied Asiimwe’s body to her parents’ home in Kisiita cell for burial, claimed that the deceased had committed suicide by taking drug overdose.

However, unconvinced by their in-laws’ claims basing on the appearance of their daughter’s body, the deceased’s  relatives together with the residents started beating  their in-laws  accusing them of killing their daughter, resulting in a fracas.

This forced some of the in-laws to flee the funeral for their lives and prompted the area LC1 chairperson, Justus Magezi to report the matter to Masindi police station that dispatched a team of anti-riot police to the scene led by ASP Odwonga Robert that calmed the situation and rescued the deceased’s husband who had been captured by the angry in-laws.

Odwonga later tasked Isingoma, the deceased’s husband, to explain to his in-laws what had exactly killed their daughter. ‘’I was informed that my wife has died, but she didn’t have any health complication,’’ he explained.

Sources say that Isingoma has been engaged in endless domestic fights with the deceased, and that last year the deceased lost one of her eyes in one of the fights. This was even admitted by his husband.

By press time, police had taken the body of the deceased to Masindi hospital mortuary for postmortem and also took Isingoma who was arrested in connection with his wife’s death to Masindi police station.
