Construction of Hoima Stadium commences
The $130 million project is expected to be completed within 18 months, aiming for readiness by December 2025.
Hoima: The construction of Hoima Stadium in Hoima City has commenced.
The contractor, M/S SUMMA, contracted by the government has begun bush clearing on the site.
The Government of Uganda, through the Ministry of Education and Sports, signed a contract with M/S SUMMA, a Turkish company, on June 7, 2024, for the construction of a 20,000-seater Hoima multi-purpose stadium ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations.
Hoima Stadium is expected to be used for the first time during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations soccer tournament.
Hoima City Deputy Mayor, Silvia Nalumaga, confirmed that the contractor reported for work on July 1, 2024, and work has started.
Nalumaga added that this project presents a great opportunity for the people of Hoima City to secure jobs and business opportunities.
Pius Wakabi Rujumba, the Member of Parliament representing Bugahya County and member of the Rujumba family that donated the Staduim land, welcomes the progress on site.
“At least there is something to show that work has started. What we want now is to see our people here both skilled and not given first priority in jobs because they are most affected.” he said
Kihumuro Atema, a resident of Nyamirima who had just been registered, said the registration exercise was transparent. “I was not asked to pay any coin to get registered, and I’m hopeful that at some point they will invite me to come for the job.” he said.
The stadium will be one of the three venues that Uganda plans to use during the tournament, which will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.
The stadium will be situated in Mparo Division, within the city of Hoima, in the Bunyoro sub-region of the Western Region of Uganda.
The stadium will occupy a total of 34.9 acres. 10 acres were donated by the estate of the late Dr. Rujumba, and another 10 acres were sold to the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (FUFA) by the same estate. The remaining 14.9 acres were acquired by the Uganda National Council of Sports.
The proposed seating capacity of the stadium is 20,000. While primarily intended for soccer matches, the stadium will also accommodate other sports, including athletics.
The $130 million project is expected to be completed within 18 months, aiming for readiness by December 2025.
