Commotion in Hoima City over alleged police eviction

Some traders reported losing mobile phones, while others had their food supplies destroyed. Several individuals also sustained injuries in the process.

Hoima: Hoima City witnessed chaos on Tuesday at Persey Street Lane following an alleged police eviction that resulted in widespread destruction of property, theft, and physical assault of several individuals.

Traders who had been operating businesses in buildings situated on the contested land were seen hastily packing their merchandise and vacating the premises. According to their claims, police officers stormed their businesses, physically assaulted them, and confiscated their goods.

Some traders reported losing mobile phones, while others had their food supplies destroyed. Several individuals also sustained injuries in the process.

Julius Ayesiga, one of the landlords affected by the eviction, expressed his intention to take legal action against the government for the damages incurred and the disruptions caused.

Hoima City Lord Mayor, Brian Kaboyo, strongly condemned the Uganda Police for their actions, stating that the city security committee had previously prohibited such an operation.

Kaboyo further noted that the police had initially claimed they were only there to demarcate the land and not to evict the traders.

Moses Muyambi, the Hoima East Division Deputy Resident City Commissioner (RCC), advised those who suffered injuries or losses during the eviction to report to the RCC’s office for assistance in seeking justice.

The eviction follows a notice issued on March 3, 2025, by Hoima City District Police Commander (DPC) SP Jimmy Tumwine.

The letter warned landlords to vacate the Hoima Police Barracks land within 14 days, a deadline that expired on March 13, 2025.
