Child neglect cases overwhelm Arua police

And in June, there were 23 cases of child neglect and 4 cases of child desertion that were registered.

Arua: The Child and Family Protection Unit at Arua Central Police Station has reported a significant rise in cases of child neglect and abuse.

From January to June this year, over 150 cases of child neglect and desertion have been registered. The reasons behind this increase include poor parenting, unexpected marriages, poverty, and family separation.

Senior Superintendent of Police Angomuko Onen Emily has urged family members and the community to be vigilant and report such cases to local councilors and the police to help reduce child suffering.

‘’Such cases are common among the communities and I asked the family members to intervene as well as the community so as to reduce child neglect.’’

Arua City has registered over 150 cases of child neglect and child desertion from January to June this year.

In January, 9 cases of child neglect were registered, while 9 cases of child desertion were also registered.

In February, 27 cases of child neglect were recorded and 8 cases of child desertion. March 24 cases of child neglect and 9 cases of child desertion were registered.

April 17 case of child neglect, 7 cases of child desertion and in May, 19 cases of child neglect and 7 cases of child desertion. And in June, there were 23 cases of child neglect and 4 cases of child desertion that were registered.

According to Section 5 of the Children Act 2016, it is the duty of the parent, guardian, or any other person having custody of the child to maintain that child that gives a child the right to education and guidance, adequate diet, clothing, among other things.
