Byarugaba threatens legal action against Kyetume, media houses

He said the station is non-partisan and does not engage in biased political activities, adding that the station is not concerned with personal political disputes.

Masindi: Godfrey Byarugaba, the NRM flag bearer for LCV Chairperson Masindi District, has threatened to take legal action against his political opponent and several media houses in the district.

In a notice of intention to sue dated January 14, 2025, issued through Kasangaki & Co. Advocates, Byarugaba accuses David Kasanga Kyetume of repeatedly making defamatory statements against him on radio and in public.

According to the lawyers, Kyetume has allegedly made false claims that Byarugaba is involved in theft and has several pending criminal cases, allegations the lawyers say are unsupported by any evidence.

The notice states that these claims have caused their client mental anguish and reputational damage. The lawyers have warned Kyetume to immediately stop making what they term as defamatory statements, especially while appearing on radio stations and in public gatherings.

The notice further cautions media houses hosting Kyetume to refrain from airing any discussions that may defame their client, warning that failure to comply will result in legal action against both Kyetume and the media houses, without further notice.

When contacted, David Kasanga Kyetume said he had not officially been served with the notice, adding that he only saw a copy shown to him. He dismissed the letter as unfounded and baseless, saying it cannot stand the test of truth and that he is not interested in spreading rumours.

Meanwhile, Edward Ziwa Majaju, the Interim Manager of Radio 7, confirmed receiving the notice. He said the station is non-partisan and does not engage in biased political activities, adding that the station is not concerned with personal political disputes.

David Kasanga Kyetume previously contested against Byarugaba in the NRM primaries but lost. He later formed an alliance with Patrick Wobusobozi, who is currently the main challenger to Byarugaba in the LCV chairperson elections scheduled for this Thursday.
