Bunyoro positioned to sustain national blood supply – PM Nabbanja

“Improving health infrastructure such as this blood bank will drive social-economic transformation across the country.”

  Hoima: Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja has lauded Bunyoro’s potential to not only meet its own blood supply needs but also significantly contribute to Uganda’s national reserves.

She made the remarks on Friday during the official commissioning of the Hoima Regional Blood Bank, the first of its kind in the region, located in Kasingo Cell, Hoima West Division.

The Prime Minister praised Bunyoro for its abundant natural resources, including oil, fertile land, and the generosity of its people, highlighting these as key assets in the region’s capacity to save lives.

“This facility is a testament to the government’s commitment to building a productive population, a cornerstone of Uganda’s Vision 2040 and the National Development Plan IV,” Nabbanja stated. “Improving health infrastructure such as this blood bank will drive social-economic transformation across the country.”

Health Minister Dr. Jane Ruth Aceng emphasized the importance of local participation, urging residents to actively donate blood. She noted that the newly commissioned facility aims to collect at least 36,000 units of blood annually a crucial step in reducing preventable deaths in the region.

Dr. Aceng also revealed ongoing efforts to complete the maternity complex at Hoima Regional Referral Hospital. The government, she said, is considering securing a loan to ensure the timely completion of the project, which is vital for maternal and child health services in the area.

Dr. Ibrahim Bwaga, Acting Director of Hoima Regional Referral Hospital, echoed the call for collaboration among stakeholders. He encouraged community members and leaders to partner with health workers to support regular blood donations, stressing that the new blood bank will significantly boost healthcare delivery in the Bunyoro sub-region.
