Buliisa: Tumukurate Silvester, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) for Buliisa, has urged residents to take an active role in monitoring and owning government projects in their district.
His call came during a half-day engagement and dissemination meeting organized by the Mid-Western Region Anti-Corruption Coalition (MIRAC) at Oil Land Hotel in Buliisa.
Deputy RDC Tumukurate highlighted the significant funds the government allocates to various projects aimed at improving livelihoods, emphasizing the importance of community oversight.
He cited the case of Ngwedo Seed Secondary School, where a government-funded kitchen worth sixty-eight million shillings was repurposed as a storage facility, a misuse that he condemned.
Tumukurate called for collaboration between district leaders and technocrats to drive meaningful transformation in Buliisa.
During the meeting, findings revealed an information gap regarding project execution. It was noted that contracts are often carried out without adhering to proper procurement procedures, and project managers are frequently excluded from monitoring activities.
Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Ismail Onzu echoed the need for adherence to established procedures, emphasizing accountability and value for money in government project implementation.
MIRAC, a non-governmental organization, has partnered with the government under the Public Procurement and Disposal of Assets (PPDA) framework to advocate for social justice and accountability in the Bunyoro region.
