Buliisa declared free of foot and mouth disease

Early this year, Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) was confirmed in over 50 districts in the country, including Buliisa district.

Buliisa: The district of Buliisa in Western Uganda has been declared and confirmed to be free of Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD).

This has been disclosed by the senior veterinary officer at Buliisa District Local Government, Dr. Rashid Mubiru, while speaking to this publication on Thursday, July 18, 2024.

Mubiru asserted that apart from manageable diseases like skin rashes in cattle, mastitis in goats, and African fever in pigs, the district is free from FMD disease in cattle.

He also adds that the district security committee resolved not to allow animals from other districts to enter the district.

In January of this year, the district started the exercise of vaccinating over 5,000 cows in the district, mostly in areas neighboring Murchison Falls National Park, to curtail and prevent the spread of the FMD.

Dr. Mubiru noted this boosted and prevented animals near the park from being infected with foot and mouth disease during this dry season.

The exercise, which was free of charge, was carried out in the parishes of Bugana, Kigoya, and Kabolwa in Buliisa Sub County.

Midway through last year, the Buliisa District Veterinary Department vaccinated more than 15000 heads of cattle against Foot and Mouth Disease.

The vaccination exercise followed an outbreak of the disease in the district.
