Bamasaaba community challenged to eliminate gender-based violence

He also called for action against early and excessive alcohol consumption, urging the cultural institution to educate the community on its dangers.

Mbale: The Bamasaaba community has been urged to ensure that all forms of violence, including deaths related to gender-based violence, are completely eliminated.

Steven Masiga, the spokesperson of the Bamasaaba people, addressed the media on domestic violence in the Elgon region, emphasizing the cultural institution’s duty to guide its people towards peaceful and harmonious living.

Masiga stated that no one has the right to take another person’s life, highlighting that Uganda’s Constitution and other punitive laws, such as the Penal Code Act, criminalize acts of homicide.

In recent days, there have been tragic incidents of domestic violence in Bududa and Namisindwa, where men unlawfully killed their wives in separate cases.

Meanwhile, in Mbale City, another man strangled his 15-year-old girlfriend, a student of Nakaloke SSS, in a lodge. Additionally, in Namakwekwe, a group of criminals unlawfully caused the death of a procurement graduate.

Masiga stressed that the cultural institution has a responsibility to reach out to communities and promote peaceful coexistence.

He warned that domestic violence has devastating effects on families, often leading to issues such as children ending up on the streets and an increase in related crimes, including murder, robbery, and theft.

He also called for action against early and excessive alcohol consumption, urging the cultural institution to educate the community on its dangers.

Uganda has strict legal provisions against theft, murder, and domestic violence. Masiga emphasized the need to educate people about these laws and the severe consequences of violating them.
