Bagungu prepare for 3rd edition of cultural gala

Bugungu: The Bagungu community is once again set to celebrate their rich cultural identity with the third edition of the Bugungu Cultural Gala, officially dubbed “Kabaari ka Mbinya Za Bugungu.”

The colorful event is scheduled for May 30, 2025, at Buliisa Town Council Grounds in Buliisa District.

Sharif Aguma, the Publicity Secretary of the Bugungu Cultural Revival Association (BUCRA), confirmed that preparations are already in high gear.

He described the upcoming gala as a vibrant celebration aimed at both showcasing Bagungu heritage and passing it on to the younger generation.

“This event is envisioned as a peaceful celebration, fostering unity and rekindling pride in Bagungu traditions,” Aguma said.

The day-long celebration will feature an exciting lineup of cultural activities, including staple food display where a chance to taste and appreciate traditional Bagungu dishes, cultural Dances where energetic performances that highlight the rhythms, music, and traditional attire of the Bagungu people.

‘’We shall have cultural dress exhibition where there is an opportunity to view and learn about the unique styles of traditional Bagungu wear, riddles and storytelling engaging narratives and brain teasers that reflect the wisdom and humor embedded in Bagungu folklore,’’ he added.

Aguma noted that the gala serves a dual purpose: to celebrate and promote Bagungu culture to neighboring communities including those working in the local oil sector and to educate youth about their roots.

While the organizing committee is still in the process of identifying a chief guest for the event, Aguma assured the public that all preparations are proceeding smoothly.

The cultural gala has steadily grown in popularity since its inception. The first edition was held on April 2, 2023, followed by the second on April 1, 2024, both at the same venue.
