Amuru: A nurse attached to Atiak Health Centre IV in Amuru District has been arrested for allegedly extorting money from the relatives of a deceased patient in exchange for treating the body.
Ogwal Denis, aged 40, was apprehended on August 4, 2025, following a sting operation by police and local authorities after he reportedly demanded payment to treat a corpse with preservatives.
According to ASP Ongom David Mudong, the Aswa West Regional Police Spokesperson, the incident occurred when Isabirye Patrick, a patient admitted to Atiak Health Centre IV, passed away shortly after arrival. In the aftermath, the deceased’s family approached Nurse Ogwal for assistance in treating the body to prevent rapid decomposition.
It is alleged that Ogwal demanded UGX 200,000 for the procedure, an amount the grieving family could not afford. He later reduced the fee to UGX 70,000 for labor alone but insisted the family supply their own formalin, which they also failed to obtain.
Feeling exploited, the family reported the matter to Mrs. Acham Proscovia, the Deputy Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Amuru District.
In response, the deputy RDC coordinated with the police to set up a trap. The family was provided with marked money, which they handed over to Ogwal. He was arrested in his office immediately after receiving the cash, and the exhibit money was recovered on the spot.
Police have since opened a case file for corruption, and investigations are ongoing. Statements have been recorded from key witnesses, and Ogwal is currently undergoing interrogation. The arrest was executed by Cpl Owori John Martin, under the direct supervision of the Deputy RDC.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to fighting corruption, especially within public service delivery sectors like health.
