Alur Kingdom calls for infrastructure development amid oil and gas boom

The visit aimed to align cultural leaders with the current developments in the sector and ensure they are well-informed.

Zombo: Vincent Orach Ocaya, the Deputy Prime Minister of Alur Kingdom, has urged the Ugandan government to prioritize the development of infrastructure in the Kingdom, particularly in the Albertine region, which holds significant oil and gas potential.

His call for action was made during a recent familiarization tour of the Lake Albert Basin oil and gas operations, organized by Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) from December 6-8, 2024.

Alur Kingdom, one of the largest ethnic groups in the Lake Albert Basin, played a prominent role in the tour, where key cultural leaders were briefed on the progress of the Tilenga and Kingfisher oil and gas projects. These developments are expected to bring transformative economic changes to the region.

In a press release, the Deputy Prime Minister emphasized the importance of infrastructure development, such as oil roads and facilities, to ensure that the local communities benefit from the booming oil industry.

Orach Ocaya expressed optimism about the future of Uganda’s oil and gas sector, calling it a “game changer” for the country’s socio-economic transformation.

The tour gave cultural leaders an opportunity to see firsthand the progress of the oil projects, including the readiness of oil production pads, crude oil storage facilities, and the implementation of royalty payments once commercial production begins. The visit aimed to align cultural leaders with the current developments in the sector and ensure they are well-informed.

The delegation was led by Vincent Orach Ocaya and included five chiefs from Jonam Pakwach District and two from Padyere in Nebbi District, along with Alur Kingdom’s cabinet ministers and other officials. This trip underscored the unity between the Alur and Jonam people, with chiefs from both groups participating in the tour.

Among the notable chiefs in attendance were Rwoth Jephta Oromcan Kerunega, Speaker of the Alur Kingdom’s Council of Chiefs, Rwoth Opar Angiya Justine, Chief of Pawong Chiefdom, and Rwoth Kasiano, Chief of Pangieth Chiefdom, among others.

The Kingdom’s leadership continues to advocate for the inclusion of infrastructure development in the region to ensure sustainable growth and equitable distribution of benefits from the oil and gas sector.
