Acholi FDC leadership divided over the Katonga resolution

Notably, on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, Buganda Road Court declared Katonga's Ambassador Wasswa Biriggwa as the FDC Party National Chairperson.

Kitgum: The leadership of the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party in the East Acholi districts of Kitgum, Lamwo, Pader, and Agago is divided over the recent resolution by the FDC Katonga faction to dissolve the party and form a new political entity for leadership in Uganda.

Morish Oyoo Santo, the Kitgum District FDC Party Chairperson, criticized the Katonga faction’s delegate conference held on Monday, August 19, 2024, at its Katonga offices, describing it as illegal.

He argued that the members involved were former party members and therefore had no authority to make such decisions.

Oyoo stated that those in the Katonga faction can form their own political movement if they wish to join the opposition fight in Uganda. However, they should refrain from attacking the FDC party headquartered in Najjanankumbi.

He further warned that no one in Kitgum can convene an FDC party meeting without his permission, emphasizing that the district party leadership remains committed to the core principles of the FDC while acknowledging the right to open entry and exit within the party.

On the other hand, Mr. Komakech John Ogwok, the Lamwo District FDC Party Chairperson, expressed support for the Katonga faction’s resolution.

He revealed that the party unanimously resolved to dissolve the FDC within six months and form a new party, aligning themselves with the recommendations made by the Katonga delegates.

Meanwhile, Apila Thomas, an FDC party member, urged the party elders not to treat the party as their personal property, affirming his loyalty to the Najjanankumbi-based FDC leadership.

Notably, on Tuesday, August 13, 2024, Buganda Road Court declared Katonga’s Ambassador Wasswa Biriggwa as the FDC Party National Chairperson.
