Kiira regional police to implement sub-county policing model

This initiative is seen as a key step towards enhancing community policing and ensuring sustainable peace and security across the region.

Jinja: The Kiira Regional Police Command is set to implement President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s directive on the proposed sub-county policing model before the end of January 2025.

This initiative, initially introduced in 2020, will be rolled out across the country, starting with ten regions, including Kiira.

At a recent Police Council meeting, IGP Abbas Byakagaba confirmed the plan to begin the rollout, and the Kiira Region Police Commander, SSP Charles Nsaba, commended the selection of Jinja, Uganda’s second-largest city, for the first phase of implementation. Jinja covers 767.7 square kilometers, with 65 square kilometers being water bodies.

SSP Nsaba outlined that specific performance objectives have been set for all commanders in the region, ensuring each receives additional training in crime prevention, community engagement, and response time improvements.

The deployment will see an increase in personnel across various sub-counties, including Mpumudde, Butagaya, Buyala, Mutai, Busedde, Buyengo, and Kisima I Island.

The model will involve 18 officers per sub-county, along with three motorcycles and communication tools like counter phones and walkie-talkies.

Jinja residents have shown strong support for the sub-county policing model, anticipating a significant reduction in crime and increased trust in law enforcement. The community believes that the heightened security presence will foster socio-economic transformation and strengthen public confidence in the government.

This initiative is seen as a key step towards enhancing community policing and ensuring sustainable peace and security across the region.
