Kiryandongo: Authorities in Kiryandongo district have officially launched a 530 million Uganda shillings road construction project aimed at improving infrastructure in Diima and Nyamahasa sub-counties.
The project, under the Uganda Support to Municipal Infrastructure Development-Additional Funding (USMID-AF), was launched on Tuesday, January 7, 2024.
The construction will focus on the 11-kilometer Diima-Mutunda road, which connects the sub-counties of Mutunda, Nyamahasa, and Diima to the Kampala-Gulu highway, as well as business centers in Bweyale and Karuma.
At the launch event held at Diima Market in Diima Sub-county, Anselm Kyaligonza, the Chief Administrative Officer, cautioned the contractor, TEB Technical Services and Contractors LTD, against poor quality work.
He emphasized the need to strictly adhere to the bills of quantities and use high-quality materials for the construction.
Kyaligonza also urged the community to avoid purchasing fuel meant for the project, as it would negatively affect the quality of the work. “This is your road. You have been complaining that the government has forgotten you. Now the road is here, you have to protect it,” Kyaligonza stressed.
Edith Aliguma Adyeri, the District Chairperson, encouraged the local community to take an active role in monitoring the progress of the roadworks to ensure high standards are maintained. She emphasized that such infrastructure projects are key to promoting better service delivery and enhancing the livelihoods of the residents.
Dan Muganga, the Resident District Commissioner (RDC) of Kiryandongo, urged the community to capitalize on the improved road network to enhance their livelihoods and fight poverty.
He advised them not to rely on outsiders to buy their produce but to take advantage of the roads to do business locally, keeping the economic benefits within the community. Muganga also warned against the destruction of road embankments for making bricks.
The road construction is expected to be completed by March, facilitating key economic activities such as agriculture, industrialization, and trade, and contributing to the region’s overall development.
