14 suspects escape from Rubanda Police Station

Authorities are working to address this issue as part of ongoing efforts to improve the justice system in the area.

Rubanda: Police in Rubanda District are on a manhunt for 14 suspects who escaped from the Rubanda Central Police Station cells.

The escape occurred on Sunday night when the suspects exploited a crack in the station’s wall. They used this opening to remove bricks and facilitate their escape.

Elly Maate, the Kigezi Sub-Region Police spokesperson, confirmed the incident on Thursday. He attributed the escape to the poor infrastructure in newly created districts like Rubanda and Rukiga, which were carved out of Kabale District.

Maate explained that these districts face challenges, including insufficient facilities such as secure cells, which contributed to the escape.

Despite the setback, Maate reassured the public that police are taking swift action to re-arrest the fugitives. As of now, two escapees have been captured, and efforts are ongoing to ensure the remaining suspects are brought back into custody to face the law.

The regional police mouthpiece also highlighted delays in processing some suspects, due to the absence of dedicated offices for the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) in both Rubanda and Rukiga districts.

Authorities are working to address this issue as part of ongoing efforts to improve the justice system in the area.
