FDC donates to Bulambuli landslide victims
This donation comes one day after Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja launched a resettlement program for landslide victims during a leaders' meeting in Maluku, Mbale.
Bulambuli: On Thursday afternoon, the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) delivered a consignment of clothes, jackets, and shoes to the victims of the recent Bulambuli landslides, who are currently sheltering at the Bunambutye Resettlement Centre, writes Emmah Bwayo.
The donation was handed over by Wokuri Madanda, the FDC Deputy President in charge of Eastern Uganda, who noted that the items were collected from FDC supporters and well-wishers.
Twala Aramazan, the Assistant Chief Administrative Officer of Bulambuli and the district’s focal person for disasters, expressed gratitude to FDC for their timely assistance and encouraged other well-wishers to offer similar support.
This donation comes one day after Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja launched a resettlement program for landslide victims during a leaders’ meeting in Maluku, Mbale. The resettlement program, valued at over UGX 50 billion, aims to permanently resettle over 1,000 people in Bunambutye to prevent further loss of life from natural disasters.
The tragic landslide that struck Bulambuli District last week claimed at least 31 lives, with fears of more casualties as recovery operations continue. The landslide, which hit the Buluganya and Sooti subcounties, buried homes, leaving many families trapped under debris and hundreds displaced.
The search operation, led by the local community and supported by over 300 UPDF soldiers, has been further strengthened with the delivery of an excavator on Sunday.
This equipment has significantly aided the recovery efforts, enabling workers to clear the thick mud and debris more efficiently.
Authorities have also initiated evacuation efforts from other high-risk areas to ensure the safety of residents. According to Rodgers Taitika, the Elgon region police spokesperson, the search remains ongoing.
Recent recoveries include the body of 7-year-old Woniala David from Namakyele village, Buluganya Parish, on December 6th, and 65-year-old peasant Woniala Paul from Masugu village, Buluganya Parish, on December 7th. These recoveries bring the total number of bodies recovered to 31.
The community is devastated by this tragic event, and efforts to provide relief and support to the victims continue as the region mourns the loss of life.
