Kitgum councillors boycott mediation meeting

The mediation was intended to address the escalating internal conflicts within the Municipality.

Kitgum: A group of Kitgum Municipality Councillors expressed strong opposition to a mediation initiative proposed by Kitgum District LCV Chairperson, Hon. Arwai Christopher Obol, which was scheduled for Friday, December 6, 2024.

The mediation was intended to address the escalating internal conflicts within the Municipality.

Hon. Nokrach Reagan, the Municipality Speaker, revealed that the councillors had raised several concerns, including inadequate communication channels and the exclusion of key stakeholders from the process. Specifically, the councillors criticized the exclusion of Division Chairpersons, Councillor V, the Area Member of Parliament, Ministers, and other influential figures who are integral to resolving the issues at hand.

Hon. Amitayo Odongpiny, the Pager A Ward Councillor, firmly stated that the Municipality’s internal conflict stems from differences in adhering to established rights and guidelines. He argued that these issues do not warrant a mediation process, as the underlying causes are based on clear principles and rules.

Hon. Anyala Martine, the Male Elders Councillor, voiced his frustration with the District Chairperson’s intervention, calling it long overdue. However, he also questioned the timing of the mediation, suggesting that it may be an attempt to formalize actions he considered to be illegal within the Municipality.

On Thursday, December 5, 2024, the councillors shared their views during a joint press briefing at Quarters, Pandwong Division, in Kitgum Municipality distancing themselves from the meeting. This bold stance has brought the internal conflict in the Municipality to the forefront of local political discourse.
